Ray Atkins' paintings of the landscape are often the culmination of many months of working and reworking, out in the open in front of his subject and can be on an epic scale. It may seem like an extreme strategy but it is a way of working that has evolved and developed over the years so that every mark, even on the largest works is a response to direct observation.
